The first day of Dussehra at Kullu is under way, with village deities arriving on the Dhalpur ground from every side of the valley.

Traffic: no cars on the Dhalpur ground this week. Park at the lots on the Bhuntar road and walk in; shuttle buses run from Bhuntar every 20 minutes until ten at night.

The stalls along the lower edge of the ground are open: shawls, caps, dry fruit and siddu. Expect queues at the food stalls after the procession.

More than 150 deities are now on the ground, the administration says. The procession is due to start at four.

Rain has held off. The weather office expects a dry afternoon and a cold evening: bring a jacket if you are staying for the evening programme.

The medical post by the main gate has seen eleven people so far, most for the heat and one for a twisted ankle.

The first palanquin reached the ground at 10.20, with drummers and a long line of villagers in Kullu caps behind it.
